Musgrave calls for AG to step aside

  • by: Haners

Here’s a sign that things are really getting bad for the AG.

http://www.denverpos…

I figure it’s only a matter of time now until he steps aside.  And to be honest, I kind of hope he does.  I haven’t followed this issue all that closely, but even if he didn’t do anything wrong, there is no way he can be effective in his job from here on out.

Fun poll, who should Bush name to replace Gonzales?

Who should Bush appoint to replace Gonzales (if he resigns)

  1. Bush wants someone who is a lackey. The Democrats will insist on someone independent. Bush can’t accept that because then a lot of what he does will be investigated.

My guess is that the only way Gonzoles goes out is via impeachment and we then get whoever is #2 in the department at that time (they’re all resigning right now) for the rest of the term.

      1. Ultimately Gonzalez is going to read the writing on the wall and resign. The only way that doesn’t happen is if his ego is really that enormous and while I don’t like the man one bit, I haven’t seen evidence that he’s so arrogant that he’ll fight to the bitter end.

Of course I don’t know if there’s been a time when such an embattled cabinet official was so closely attached to the President, or a time when the President had assembled such a team of personal allies as his cabinet for that matter. It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out. But ultimately it’s in the nation’s best interest that Gonzalez step down. Right or wrong, he’s too embroiled in this mess to run DOJ effectively and it simply will not blow over. Time to step down and get someone else in there.

    1.   If the opinion of Congress, even Repubs, mattered, Gonzo would be long gone already.  He isn’t because they don’t.  The only thing that matters is to cover Rove (and Bush) lawbreaking.

And forget the Dem’s just-for-show “no  confidence”  vote.  They don’t have the evidence or the muscle or the votes.

The only way Gonzo goes is if one of the underlings like Goodling or Sampson gives away material evidence, sufficient to impeach or to make it clear that grounds are available.  And those whippersnapppers know that their professional futures depend on their holding silent.

As it is, Gonzo just provides an opportunity for Repubs like Musgrave to score cheap shots and demonstrate their pseudo-independence from the Bush administration.
